9A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

Although many people share my unmet need of having something more convenient and fashionable to hold your key while you go out, some people would still not prefer to wear it on their wrist.  I have some friends who I spoke to that know that it is a problem of people losing their keys, but they have yet to experience it themselves, so they wouldn't need a product like the one I came up with. My need of having a fashionable solution to not losing your key goes deeper into the need of being safe on and off our college campus.  Without your key, you could be locked out of your apartment late at night after coming home from the library or going out, and it is not easy to get a new one at those hours.  This has happened to me and I had to stay at my friend's apartment, but I was lucky she was awake to help me out. The underlying cause of the need of people outside the boundary vs inside is very similar-I believe most people share this need, but it is whether they desire ...

8A – Solving The Problem

My solution to the problem of college students easily losing their home or important key when on the go is a fashionable bracelet that has a clip where your key attaches to.  They could come in different shades (gold, silver and rose gold) and be personalized (engraved, charms, etc.) to appeal to people with different interests.  For example, they could personalize their initials, school symbol, sorority symbol, birthstone, etc.  I have been thinking about this idea for a long time and it just came back into my mind when I was trying to think of an opportunity to tackle.

7A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 1

I am pursuing an opportunity through a problem I have experienced as well as many of my friends and peers.  The issue I have had is I've lost my apartment key several times throughout my time at college and know many of my friends who have experienced the same problem. Students at University of Florida and campuses nationwide often lose their apartment and important keys when on the go during the day and at night in college. The who: Students  The what: Losing apartment/important key when on the go The why: It is easy to lose keys when they are just in your pocket or purse and they can easily fall out/be lost There are others who have the need.  I interviewed several of my friends, their roommates and their boyfriends (to try to branch out from my friend group) and every single person either said they do have that problem or know someone that has that problem.  I believe all students have this issue because I believe every person has a key of some sort to ge...

6A – Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

Regulatory Changes  Endangered and Threatened Species: Listing Species and Designating Critical Habitat: https://www.regulations.gov/document?D=FWS-HQ-ES-2018-0006-0001 The  U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service propose to further  implement section 4 of the Endangered Species Act of 1973 which clarifies the removal of species from the endangered list and designating critical habitat.  The need for this comes from the desire to have higher efficiency and effectiveness of current regulations and processes.  I think this creates an opportunity to create a system or platform that can help identify areas where it is possible to create a critical habitat for a species in need, and on the same platform there could be something more aligned for the public to see where critical areas are, to be more aware.  The fact that I love animals and have spent time learning about endangered species but I have never heard of these specific acts and the need for higher effic...

5A - Identifying Local Opportunities

I chose the newspaper of my hometown, Columbus, Ohio.  Most of the articles I chose for opportunities are actually more serious problems, but they do affect people everyday. Local Newspaper:   The Columbus Dispatch (Columbus, Ohio) Opportunity #1: “Old House Handyman: Brush with paint sprayer didn’t go as planned”, http://www.dispatch.com/entertainmentlife/20180909/old-house-handyman-brush-with-paint-sprayer-didnt-go-as-planned In this article, a man and his father were painting a shed and building.   First, they used brushes but they didn’t like how it turned out so they got out an old sprayer because their new sprayers were two hours away at his house.   After having trouble, they tried thinning the paint and cleaning the sprayer, but it ended up being thrown away after 4 long hours of hard work that did not complete their project.   In the end, he said he had so much trouble he planned on just finishing with a brush. The pro...

4A - Forming An Opportunity Belief

In my buglist, I identified one of my bugs as there being little to no parking on campus.  The parking that is on campus is either too far away, a school pass required or just not easy to get your car into depending on the type of car you have and your driving skills.  If there is a place to park that fulfills one or all of these factors, you may be paying upwards of $200 a month with a full-year contract.  For example, I live in the Standard and we are not allowed to buy and use Gainesville city parking because we have access to the garage, but it is $150 a month.I believe the unmet need is accessibility to safe parking without overcharging and most students who have a car on campus have this need which creates an opportunity.  This need has always been prevalent, and the student population is steadily increasing.  According to UF's enrollment facts, in 2011 the Fall Cohort Headcount was 49,785 students and in 2017 it was 55,862 students.  To meet the need...

2A - Buglist

There is very limited parking on UF's campus.  This leads me to have to pay $150 a month at my apartment complex and because I live in this apartment, we are not allowed to buy Gainesville parking. The lack of UF parking on campus and off-campus but close to campus makes it easy for companies like apartment complexes to make a lot of money because students don't have many options. The parking garage I park my car in where I live is so small. Barely two cars can fit around one corner and even though the speed limit is 5, people speed around the corners up to speeds of 20 mph.  I feel like I'm going to crash every time. Whoever created this garage was more focused on getting as many spots as possible rather than having enough space to cars to drive through safely.  There also isn't much land around the garage for it to be overall bigger. Scooters share the road with many cars with heavy traffic.  Yes, they are similar to motorcycles, but they are way less pow...

My Entrepreneurship Story

Image
My family friends in Gainesville own a business called ITProTV, which is said to be "the Netflix of IT learning."  I visited it a few times this summer, and it was so cool.  The office space was so modern and innovative.  Right when you walked in the doors it just felt fresh, inviting and like you wanted to learn and be engaged.  Our family friends who own it are also some of the most genuinely nice and caring people I have ever met.  I think having the mindset to want to genuinely help people around you inside and outside of your business is something that can truly lead entrepreneurs to success. A photo inside ITProTV I decided to enroll in Principles of Entrepreneurship because not only have I heard that it is one of the most rewarding classes at UF (the information you learn is so beneficial whether you open up a business or not) but also because like mentioned in the first weeks of lectures, entrepreneurship is not just owning a business, it's a mi...
