My Entrepreneurship Story
My family friends in Gainesville own a business called ITProTV, which is said to be "the Netflix of IT learning." I visited it a few times this summer, and it was so cool. The office space was so modern and innovative. Right when you walked in the doors it just felt fresh, inviting and like you wanted to learn and be engaged. Our family friends who own it are also some of the most genuinely nice and caring people I have ever met. I think having the mindset to want to genuinely help people around you inside and outside of your business is something that can truly lead entrepreneurs to success.

I decided to enroll in Principles of Entrepreneurship because not only have I heard that it is one of the most rewarding classes at UF (the information you learn is so beneficial whether you open up a business or not) but also because like mentioned in the first weeks of lectures, entrepreneurship is not just owning a business, it's a mindset. It's a mindset that I want to have for problem solving and looking at the world around me, and maybe one day I will use what I learn to make a business idea into something real.

Sydney,
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting post! I'm happy to hear that your friend's experience with operating a business has worked out so well! Additionally, I agree that Principles of Entrepreneurship seems like it will be a very rewarding class. Developing the entrepreneurial mindset through experience exercises, including this one, will certainly be rewarding regardless of whether or not we choose to open our own businesses. Good luck with the class!

Thank you Zach! This is definitely my favorite class I am currently taking. Good luck to you, too!
DeleteHi Sydney,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed your post and learning a little about ITProTV! I think it is great that you have a contact with someone who is currently going through the entrepreneurship process so that you can learn from their business and get a great insight on how they operate. I also believe that this class will be rewarding and we will be able to gather a lot of knowledge on not only how to open our own business but how to utilize that mindset in our daily living.
Hi Aubrey! Thank you! it is cool how this class has already had the chance to positively affect our mindset with our daily lives.
DeleteHi Sydney,
DeleteThank you for sharing your story. I think it is really cool what is happening in the Gainesville startup scene. I have noticed a lot of office buildings on 2nd ave between campus and downtown that host new businesses. There is even a bike sharing service (like Citi bike in New York) by one of the roundabouts.
I would be curious to see why your friends decided to start a business in GNV? Is it super business friendly? How have they seen the startup scene change?
Thanks,
Grant
Hi Grant! I just want to let you know that you commented in reply to Aubrey's comment instead of my initial post--I don't want that to possibly affect you getting credit for your peer reviews!
DeleteThat's a really good question that I will definitely ask them next time I see them.

Hi Sydney,
ReplyDeleteI love this post. I can appreciate your agreement with the professor that being an entrepreneur is a mindset. I believe this, as well. It seems to me that some people have a natural inclination to turn their strengths into a product that satisfies a need. Your friends' success with ITProTV is a case in point. They were able to use their strengths to produce a product to service the "IT World." My friend developed an online directory (not for profit) of local (not for profit) organizations in my hometown who needed volunteers to help service the community. Since all of the local high school students are required to complete a minimum of 20 community service hours to graduate, this online directory became the "go to" place for students to volunteer. At any rate, I agree that those with an entrepreneur mindset seem to recognize "needs" that exist based on their own experience with, or observation of "unmet needs" around them. Nice post! Best, Emily Husak
Hi Emily,
DeleteThat is such a need idea! I love spending my time volunteering, that would be cool to have here in Gainesville.
Thanks,
Sydney
