14A – Halfway Reflection

1) Tenaciousness is a competency. What are the behaviors that you have used (or developed) to keep up with the requirements of this course?
I had a hard time keeping up with deadlines my second year at school.  I was involved with a lot on campus and struggled to learn how to balance everything.  Now being in this class when there are multiple assignments every week where each one counts for 1-3% of your grade, I learned how to keep up with deadlines and how much easier it is to do things in advance.  I also learned how to be more involved in something and how much more you can gain from that.  I'm used to watching lectures at home but now I make the effort to go to class and see it in person and I gain so much more from that.
2) Tenaciousness is also about attitude. Talk about a moment or two when you felt like "giving up." What pulled you through? Do you feel like you've developed a tenacious attitude during the past two months? What experience or experiences most contributed to this?
Honestly, I am leaving for Nashville in 4-5 hours (I decided this a couple hours ago) and I don't plan on sleeping before then!  I felt like giving up on this week's assignments today because I don't think I can bring my laptop with me, but then I decided I would be efficient with my time and do my blog posts before I left.  What pulled me through was the fact that I am not a person to neglect an assignment, even if it weren't to change my grade for the worse.  I also actually really enjoy this class, so I want to always participate and do my best.  I truly thing the past two months I have developed a more tenacious attitude and I believe that stems from three things:
  1. The people I surround myself with motivate me to always do my best
  2. My change of major to something I truly am passionate about (From Pre-Health to Leadership Development and Communication
  3. My motivations-I work hard not only for myself, but for my faith and the people who have worked so hard for me like my family

3) Three tips. What are three tips you would offer next semester's student about (1) fostering the skills that support tenacity and (2) developing the 'tenacious mindset' ?
If I could give three tips to students next semester for these two subjects:
  1. Put your time and mind into these assignments.  Think of them as activities that will make you grow as a person and entrepreneur--not just busy work.
  2. Go to class!!! It is fun and you absorb so much more (my opinion) when you are seeing it live versus on a computer screen.
  3. Stay on top of deadlines.  Do all of the assignments and any extra credit you can get because you never know what is going to happen when you cannot complete a blog post or forget to declare your work.

  1. Hi Sydney,
I really enjoyed your advice to future students and the funny picture at the end. I agree with you that it is easier to work ahead as you did with Nashville (have a good trip!). I am in France now and had to bring my laptop because I had not worked ahead. I also agree with your thoughts on finding the right major and surrounding yourself with the right people. Both of those things make college immensely easier.
    Best,

  2. Sydney,

These are some great insights for future students in this course! I especially like your observations under "tenaciousness as an attitude" - the ability to keep moving forward even when faced with adversity is critical in both this course and the business environment in general. I also enjoyed your tip about staying on top of deadlines. It's very easy, especially in a course that is primarily completed online, to let deadlines pass by if they are not kept up with rigorously. Great post!

  3. Hi Sydney,
I think you did a great job on this assignment! I like how you mentioned that you almost gave up this weeks assignments due to a social event because I think this is something that will spring on everyone from time to time. Im glad that you decided it wasn't worth missing out on this weeks assignments because it shows your determination for the class. I hope you had a great trip!

  4. Hi Sydney,
I could feel and appreciate your tenaciousness while I was reading your post. This class does have a lot of assignments due every week, and sometimes I also feel that my other responsibilities, and my other classes make it stressful for me to make the deadlines for this class. However, your insight into treating the assignments of this class "...as activities that will make you grow as a person and entrepreneur--not just busy work..." really hit home. I agree that the assignments for this class, although it seems like they are many, will stay with us forever. Each lesson directly applies to "how to become an entrepreneur." Nice post. Best, Emily

  5. Hello Sydney,

I agree with you that this class requires you to plan your work ahead, otherwise you’ll get overwhelmed with all the assignments. I like the tips that you gave. If you think of the assignments as helping you in the long run, then they will be more enjoyable and you will be more inclined to do them. Staying on top of deadlines is still something I have trouble doing, even with a calendar. Great post and tips!

    Regards,
    Ramar
