16A –What’s Your Secret Sauce?
Five ways that I think my human capital makes me unique:
- I would say that I have high emotional intelligence--I realize that emotions play an important part in communication and working with others. Emotions can create conflict, but also solve it. I am good at reading others' emotions and always pay close attention to how I can make them feel better and also succeed.
- I also think that I am determined. I am fortunate to attend UF, but I have had many small "failures" here not getting on sports teams or into organizations, but I let this make me a harder worker instead of giving up. I think this is an important attribute to have when creating your own business.
- I believe that I have a skill of being able to picture how things work well together in my head/having a vision for things. With my product being jewelry, I feel that I can tell what would look good together/the current trends and what people would like.
- I also believe that when I do things, I make sure that I complete them no matter how long and how much effort it takes.
- I am compassionate about others and their happiness so I believe this would set me apart because in a business my customer service would be strong and the customer would be put first.
First, I interviewed my friend Anna. She said that my compassion and care for others makes me different and that I show this at our sorority dinners. I asked her if it would translate into a business setting and she said she thought it would definitely help in a group project. This was my 5th human capital example as well.
Next, I interviewed my friend Emily. She is also in my sorority and she said that I am very nice and always go out of my way to do things for other people which made me feel really good. This goes along with my forth and fifth example I mentioned above.
Thirdly, I interviewed my friend Cadi. She pointed out something that the others hadn't so far which was when in a group setting, I take charge and motivate others when they may be confused or not putting in effort. This was nice to hear and I thought her interview closely related to my second and fourth point I made about myself.
Fourthly, I interviewed my good friend, Emily. She said that when I do something, I make sure that it is perfect and put all my effort into it. I think this was basically repeating what I meant in different words compared to my fourth bullet.
Lastly, I interviewed my dad. I knew he would probably have the most to say because I'm close with my dad and he is my biggest cheerleader. He said that I am confident, passionate about what I love, and amicable. This was uplifitng and definitely made me want to always continue to strive to be this way.

I think I see myself the same way that others see myself, but I don't think I thought that other people necessarily thought the same. Even though everyone I interviewed I'm really close to, we don't really talk about what they think about me because it is not a conversation that comes up everyday. I wouldn't make any changes to my original list because I think they were almost the exact same as what other said.
Sydney,
ReplyDeleteThis is some excellent feedback you've received! I certainly feel like I've gotten to know you better having read this post and watched these interviews. I also think many of the characteristics identified by friends and family will give you distinct advantages in entrepreneurial environments. It's interesting that your self-assessment matched up so closely to those of your interviewees - mine matched up very closely as well. Good work!
Zach
Hi Sydeny,
ReplyDeleteYou got great interviews from your friends and family! I like how you said that you did not think everyone would see yourself the way you do. I think it was a reassuring assignment to realize that our peers do recognize our good qualities. I also like the characteristics you pointed out, I think they are all qualities that make a great entrepreneur!
Hi Sydney,
ReplyDeleteGreat job coming up with 5 unique qualities about yourself. It shows that you know yourself well and that you are consistent with your friends and family because your interviews reiterated what you saw in yourself. I think your ability to work well with others and see how things fit together are important qualities for starting a business. Also, determination is key as many times you will be by yourself as an entrepreneur and need to overcome failures.
Best,
Grant
Hi Sydney,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like the people who know you well agree with the five unique qualities that you used to describe yourself. Your Dad summed up your qualities with his opinion of you as "confident, passionate, and amicable." These qualities, along with your compassion, ability to work with others, and "take charge" attitude will combine to help you be successful in your business ventures.
Best, Emily
