21A – Reading Reflection No. 2

1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
The general theme of the book, How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big, by Scott Adams is that you can "fail" several times, but you can also transform this failure to move you forward like the author, Scott Adams, did.  He talks about how important personal energy, systems and skills can be for success.
2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
The book enhances what we are learning about in ENT 3003 because we constantly talk about how the entrepreneurship journey is not an easy one and may come with many failures.  If all the successful entrepreneurs that we learn about in this class gave up when they failed, we would be without a lot of products and innovative ideas that impact us today.
3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
If I had to design an exercise for this class, I would say naming multiple times you have failed in your life--big or small.  At the end of the exercise, the class could reflect on how this could all be positive.  This could be nice and transforming to people because maybe they have never looked at their past failures as positive.
4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
My biggest surprise of reading the book was reading about personal energy.  The aspect of putting your personal (mental and physical) health first in order to be successful is something I focus on doing everyday, but not a lot of my friends understand or agree with me when I do it.  So reading that a successful leader does this as well, made me realize that we have an important life strategy in common.

  1. Sydney,

These are some excellent reflections on How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big! It's great to see that the book was so insightful for you. I especially liked your response to question 2, where you connected what you learned from the book with what we've learned in ENT3003. It's certainly powerful to realize that failure can be a precursor to great achievements in busines. Great post!

  2. Hi Sydney,

Great job on your book review. I loved your ability to relate the book to ENT and to your own personal life. I think that once you realize that making mistakes or failing is not a big deal when you can work harder the next time, life become a lot easier. I also agree that making sure your mental and physical health are good first will make other areas easier.

  3. Hi Sydney,

I like the book that you chose to read. I think that it is very important that we take care of our personal energy first before we start dealing with other things. I am starting to learn to do that and it helps me a lot. I like the fact that the book turns failures into positive things, instead of them being negative.
