26A – Celebrating Failure

This semester, I applied for a position in an organization I'm in.  I did not get the position, and I had the opportunity to challenge the position, but I didn't because I thought that who got it deserved it, too.  I was sad I did not get the position, but then I was an offered a position I actually like better and am honored to have it.  This is a lesson I have learned at UF--that yes there will be failures, but I believe there is a bigger plan for me than my own and sometimes I just have to wait after I get a no.

I naturally handle failure emotionally.  For example, after not getting a position you want in an organization, the easiest thing to do in your head may be to just leave the organization--that was the initial thought in my head, and I know that has happened to other people I know, too.  But in a time like this, it is important to think logically.  This class has shown me super successful entrepreneurs that have all had at least one thing in common--failure.  I have learned that big successes usually don't come without failure first.  After taking this class, I am definitely more inclined to take a risk in starting a business, or taking a risk in anything else.  I am also more accepting to failures, big and small.

  1. Hello Sydney! I'm sorry to hear that you didn't get the position you applied for. It's great to see that a better opportunity did come and you were able to take that instead! I'm glad to see that you have been seeing the successful aspect of failure, and growing as an entrepreneur!

  2. Hi Sydney,

I can relate your story above completely! I am sorry that you did not get your intended position, but it sounds like it worked out for the best anyway. There have been a couple times throughout the past few years that I did not get everything I applied for. And while at the time I was of course upset, I later realized that the other paths I decided to take would not have been possible if I had gotten those positions. I am glad that you were able to look at this in a positive light and use it toward your mindset as an entrepreneur!

  3. Hi Sydney,

Thank you for sharing your story. I think you made a great link between this class with entrepreneurs and your personal experience. I agree that it is easy to react emotionally and thinking logically is the best option. I believe that getting over this failure will help you with whatever you decide to pursue going forward.

  4. Hi Sydney,

I liked the story that you shared. I believe that everyone can relate to having gone through a failure and having to decide how to handle it. For me, I handle my failures emotionally as well. I am trying to work on making failures into something more positive that can help me looking towards the future. Great post!
